International Speedway Tournament 1973

7 teams, 18 tracks, 19 days, 22 meetings, 66 top quality riders, 286 heats and 1,145 laps. The biggest international Speedway event in the sport’s history – arguably the nearest thing Speedway has come, and perhaps will ever come, to a soccer-style World Cup - and it came down to a single race-off that is still discussed and debated to this day!

World class riders * including Anders Michanek, Jim Airey, Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore, Ole Olsen, Zenon Plech, Ray Wilson and Peter Collins took to the stage in a festival of two-wheeled thrills and spills. Twenty-one qualifying matches and two semi-finals gave rise to an enthralling climax at Wembley between the hosts, England, and the potent Swedes that has subsequently been included in a list of the 20 best Speedway meetings **.
